As the team heading the Miss Tourism Northern region competitions prepare for this weekend’s crowning, they used the chance to take the 10 contestants around different tourism sites. The most notable activity was the girl’s visit to Barlonyo memorial site located in Agweng Sub County found in Lira.
The site is known memorial site, a destination known for dark tourism and according to the guide at the site, in the early 2000s in space of 3 days, over 5,000 people were massacred, raped/defiled and abducted by the LRA rebels and turned to young soldiers and slaves. Today, there lies a monument and V-shaped grave where the massacred people were buried and that is the reason it is known as the dark tourism destination.
After the girls visited, they want back to boot camp to prepare for the big day. The crowning will take place at Lira hotel and out of the 10 girls, the 7 girls will be eliminated and the three, will represent at the grand finale on September 13th at the Kampala Serena Hotel.
